"A man from the stars."
— Description in EarthBound Beginnings

Starmen are enemies that appear in both EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound. They are the main agents of Giygas.

History[]

EarthBound Beginnings[]

Starmen appear in many places in EarthBound Beginnings. One is first fought as a boss, appearing as a monochromatic hotel worker in Spookane's hotel that attacks Ninten and co. after they sleep the night, charging a suspiciously cheap fee to lure them in. As an enemy, they can be found in Ellay, the Yucca Desert, north of Youngtown, the Swamp, and at the base of Mt. Itoi. Another version appears in the office of the Zoo, called Starman Jr, a weaker version of the regular Starmen.

EarthBound[]

They are found in the Stonehenge Base. Here, they are significantly stronger, providing a substantial amount of experience when defeated and rarely drop a Brain Food Lunch. The Starmen and the others of Giygas's army in the Stonehenge Base retreat once the Starman Deluxe is defeated.

Battle[]

EarthBound Beginnings[]

Attacks[]

EarthBound[]

Their battle theme is Battle Against A Machine.

Groups with[]

Attacks[]

  • Fire a beam - The Starman fires a beam, dealing around 60 hit points of damage to one party member.
  • Is on guard - The Starman defends the attacks on the turn.
  • PSI Magnet α - The Starman tries PK Magnet α, draining PP for one of the party members.
  • Shield α - The Starman tries PK Shield α, protecting one of the enemies.
  • Use the Sudden Guts Pill - The Starman uses a Sudden Guts Pill, rainsing their Guts.

Strategy[]

  • Trying to Solidify a Starman with items such as Jeff's Slime Generator or the Monkey's Love has a relatively high chance of success.

In Super Smash Bros.[]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

A Starman is featured in the form of a trophy. The trophy is obtained as a random drop in any of the single-player modes or from the Lottery.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

A Starman appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a sticker. It can be equipped by only Ness or Lucas, and by doing so, either character's PK attack is increased by ten points in The Subspace Emissary.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

Starman is an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, as well as a trophy in both versions. Once summoned, the Starman proceeds to teleport around the stage. After teleporting, it stops in its place, glows, and attacks using either PK Beam γ or PK Beam Ω, both of which can inflict moderate damage and momentarily stun whoever is hit. The beams act like energy projectiles, so they can be absorbed or reflected. If the opponents deal enough damage the Starman while it is still active, the Starman is defeated, and both the "SMAAAASH!" text and sound effect from EarthBound are shown before it disappears prematurely.

Starmen are also enemies in the exclusive Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS mode, Smash Run. They behave identically to their Assist Trophy counterparts, but if the player reflects a Starman's beam back at it, the Starman is defeated instantly, with the game also displaying the "SMAAAASH!" text.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

  • Just one kooky subset of the diverse cast of enemies in EarthBound, these strange creatures are aliens in the employ of Giygas. Variations of the Starman race include Starman, Starman Jr., Starman Deluxe, and Starman Super. They all use PSI powers, but their strength differs depending on the level on which they're found.

  • NTSC
    • 3DS version: These alien henchmen serve Giygas, the chief villain of EarthBound. In Smash Bros., the assist trophy Starman will teleport around and fire off PSI moves like PK Beam γ or PK Beam Ω. You can defeat one summoned by an opponent, but they won't go down without a fight.
    • Wii U version: These alien henchmen serve Giygas, the chief villain of EarthBound. In Smash Bros., the Assist Trophy Starman will teleport around and fire off PSI moves like PK Beam γ or PK Beam Ω. You can defeat one summoned by an opponent, but they won't go down without a fight.
  • PAL:
    • Both versions: Starmen, the evil Giygas's henchmen in the Mother series, are renowned alien space assassins. Summon one in this game, and it'll teleport about, firing off attacks like PK Beam γ, which targets a foe, and PK Beam Ω, which fires across the whole stage in up to four directions. Starmen can be taken out, but...not easily.
